Starlight is a Fabric mod developed to enhance the lighting performance and resolve lighting errors in Minecraft. This mod aims to rewrite the light engine, providing a more efficient lighting system for a better gameplay experience.
For future updates beyond version 1.20, please refer to the official project page here. However, it is important to note that this project may not receive continuous updates in the near future.
Compatibility-wise, Starlight can be installed on both dedicated server and client sides. It is not necessary to install it on both sides. Clients can connect using Vanilla/Phosphor/Starlight to servers with Starlight and vice versa.
It should be noted that Starlight is not compatible with Phosphor due to their complete incompatibility. Moreover, browsing through Starlight’s Issue Tracker will reveal further mod incompatibilities, as it is a significant rewrite of the light engine.
The main purpose behind developing Starlight was to address performance issues on high-scale dedicated servers caused by the sluggish light engine. This mod offers a more efficient solution by completely rewriting the light engine, providing better performance for multiplayer servers. The fabric version allows for easier updates during snapshots, making it beneficial for all users.

When looking at the performance comparisons, Starlight significantly improves block editing and normal block light updates. The performance benchmarks indicate a notable enhancement in gameplay experience, specifically in areas like chunk generation and high y-level block editing.
